AFRICA INSURANCE WOMEN ASSOCIATION (AIWA)
The Africa Insurance Women Association (AIWA) is a pioneering organization dedicated to empowering, advocating for, and advancing the role of women in Africa's insurance sector. Established with a vision to create an inclusive and dynamic platform for women professionals, AIWA aims to address the challenges faced by women in the industry, foster leadership, and promote diversity and gender equity across the insurance landscape in Africa.
The idea of PlLA AFRICA was conceived during the first international exchange program (An initiative of PILA Nigeria) in the Gambia in May 2013. The well attended program provided opportunity for exchange of knowledge and interaction between the members of PlLA Nigeria and their Gambia counterparts.
The success of this program propelled the Association to continue with the International Educational Program on a bi-annual basis to date. Subsequently, the program were held in Ghana (2015), South Africa (2017), Kenya (2019) and virtually due to the Covid pandemic in 2021, to further promote the aims and objectives of the Association and a call for the formation of a female insurance association in each of the Countries visited andacross Africa.
There have been various engagements which have led to the establishment of Women in Insurance Associations in Ghana (2015), Uganda (2020), Kenya (2022) to mention but a few. Other countries are at various stages of formation. We must recognize and appreciate the past presidents of PlLA, especially the late Dr. Mrs. Tonia Smart, who worked tirelessly to move this initiative forward.
By the last quarter of December, 2022, a call by PlLA Nigeria President, Lady Margaret Nkechi Moore on the leaders of Women Insurance Associations in African, for the advancement of PlLA Africa being one of her thrust of office, led to the formation of a whatsApp platform of which 13 Countries in Africa are represented. These are: Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritius, Ghana, Uganda, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Gambia, Ethiopia and Togo. An inaugural meeting was held on the 28th of February 2023 which witnessed the change of name from Association of Professional Insurance Ladies in Africa (PILA Africa) to Africa Insurance Women Association (AIWA).
